Avid Media Composer Root Drive
Hi, I've just joined the Community and need some basic help. I've just bought MC7, have the Lynda.com tutorials with exercise files, and want to know something about the 'why' of the root directory. The Lynda.com exercise files are filed on my D-drive, tucked away within their own folder.
BUT the tutorials explicitly state that the related Avid MediaFiles must be out of a 'folder within a folder, etc.' , and must reside on the D-drive root directory.
(I've found that the difference means that the relavent is now not Offline.) Ok, so this is how it's done, that's fine. But once I've been through the tutorials and am now ready to tackle my own projects, bearing in mind that my own projects will have their relevant media filed away in innumerable locations, how will this affect things? Please advise, thank you DC. The Avid media folder ALWAYS needs to be at the root level. It is the ONLY place Avid will look for it. This is historically one of the strengths of Avid's media management. You can take any drive, connect it to any Avid, and Media Composer knows exactly what media is on that drive in the Media folder.
No relinking necessary. Compare that to FCP 7 which needs help finding media anytime anything is moved around.Flash forward to AMA, which doesn't live in the media folder. Now those AMA files can be anywhere. And if anything is moved or folders renamed, etc.

You have to go through a relinking process just like FCP 7. To gain the advantage of Avid media folders with AMA files, you need to transcode or consolidate them to the Avid media folder. This is the recommended workflow for long term edits.

Strictly speaking, is my own footage the same as, or different to, specific Avid Media Files?Your media (meaning things you intend to import or link with AMA) can be anywhere. Avid's media is ALWAYS going to be where it HAS to be once MC creates it. That's files that have been imported as well as renders, titles and other files that have been created from within MC. Once MC has created its own media files in those specific places it uses, you don't need the original files anymore except for archiving or for transcoding to a higher resolution if you're doing an offline/online workflow starting with low-res media.If what you got from Lynda.com is Avid media, then it's ready to use in MC by just putting in into the Avid MediaFilesMXF1 folder (or the same path with any number as the name of the last folder where the '1' is) as long as that path starts at the root level of a drive.

But as I said before, if the get moved or renamed, you will have to relink to them.

Strictly speaking, is my own footage the same as, or different to, specific Avid Media Files?That depends upon your media. If you have media in a natively supported Avid format, like DNxHD for example, it is the same as it will be in Avid. If you 'consolidate' Avid just rewraps the media in a new container that is stored in the Avid media files folder.If you 'transcode' then Avid is chcnging your media to a new codec. So you may hav some h.264 footage that you transcode to DNxHD. In that case Avid converts the file and wraps it in a new container and puts it in the Avid media files folder of whatever drive you point to.

Basically what the title says. I have an avid media composer first project, with all of it's media, on an external drive. When I have it open at my personal windows 10 PC, all the media correctly loads. However, when I open it on my school's mac, everything is unlinked. If I then delete all the media and replace them on the mac, they become unlinked when I open the project at home.I'm thinking it has to do with the drive names, and that maybe avid needs to figure out where to find the media.
I tried relinking, but to no avail. I also tried to do the 're-import' from source browser or whatever, but that failed also.Some things to note:My drive is formatted for exFAT to let it work on both PC and Mac.My 'Avid Media Files' folder is also on the root level of my external drive. It needs to be root level.You should also try deleting the database files (the only two files in the folder that are not labeled.mxf). I believe they are.pmr and.mdb or something. Your computer will rebuild these files. Again, the avid media files folder needs to be at the main level of the drive and the names of the folders cannot have been messed with (Avid Mediafiles vs Avid Media Files).edit: sorry I just saw that you linked via ama. I don’t have great advice for that. Except that I don’t recommend it for this very reason. For AMA linked files that are offline.Open the bin with the AMA linked files and while in the bin go to source browser, locate one of the files in your computer and link to again, if all your files are together it should refresh your offline AMA linked files and make them online.
If your files are in separate places you’ll need to locate the next offline one and continueFor Transcoded files:Delete the.mdb (media database) and.pmr files - this should force Avid to rebuild the database and bring your media back onlineORGo to the AvidMediaFiles folder and rename it AvidMediaFilesXGo to the project and create a title or generate some tone, a new AvidMediaFiles folder will appear, copy all your mxf media from the “X” folder to your new folder and see if that brings everything back online. Secondly to explain your problem further.PC mounts via drive letter, this means it will assign the drive to the next available letter, avid uses this drive letter to differentiate between various media sources.Mac uses volumes or ips to mount.Meaning when swapping between pc and Mac you’re telling either a Mac to look at a PC drive letter and it’ll have no clue what it’s looking for so it puts the media offline. Moving from Mac to pc it’s the reverse problem, there’s no drive letter assigned to the media in avid so it won’t know where to look.The easiest fix is just linking all the clips into a bin again and this’ll relocate the offline clips automatically for you. If it doesn't relink automatically, you should be able to relink them with the 'current bin' option as long as everything is named the same as the old clips.To do this, highlight all of the new AMA clips you created, right click on your sequence and select Relink.
On the relink screen, tell it to relink to all open bins.This should relink all of your offline footage to the new AMAS. You will of course have to do this again if you switch back to your home computer.Hopefully this helps!.
