There are few surprises in Saints Row. From the moment you open your limited edition gun pack to the moment the game's soundtrack serenades you with all its 'niggas and bitches', you know what you're in for. What you're in for is, of course - and there's no getting round it - a bit like GTA. It's got that same mix of open world and sandbox structure, in which you're free to enact all your vehicular-based crime-spree fantasies.

With lots of guns and shooting. But while the original felt a bit like playing a graphically spruced up GTA III, the new features in feel more like a graphically sharper version of San Andreas, right down to the comedy German on the radio. The main drawbacks, then, are the same as they've always been for open-world crime sims.

There's the dodgy AI, and the random glitches. There's the controller-smashing moments of occasional unfairness, such as policemen passing by at mission-critical moments, or enemies zooming out of nowhere to run you over from off-screen and allies who are more dangerous than your enemies - woe betide you if one of your gang members picks up a rocket launcher. You will frequently find yourself loitering around empty streets waiting for a car to come - why are there no parked cars in Stilwater?!

- and, of course, there's the way each bit of the game - like the driving, for example, or the shooting - isn't quite as good as the games that focus on just those bits. But of course, you'll find yourself forgiving all (or at least most) of these drawbacks, because in spite of them, Saints Row 2 still provides the considerable joy and satisfaction of driving round a simulated, sandbox world, picking whatever activities please you.And while we're on the subject of complaints, there are a fair few. With so many things counting against it, then, it is to the game's credit that it still manages to provide plenty of fun and a lot of enjoyment. Being forced to play the mini-games to unlock the story missions is still a little bit irritating (okay, so that's another niggle), but there's plenty of variety - a mix of almost all of the mini-games from the first game plus an almost equal amount of new ones. Spraying sewage is bound to be a hit with people who find poo funny and insurance fraud remains gleeful fun.

And now you even get to fly combat helicopters around - because, yes, there are helicopters, and bikes, and planes, just like in San Andreas.

It's listed in a.pdf in relation to the the recent VA strike ( ) but I still say there's no way in ♥♥♥♥ it's ever going to see the light of day on PC or current gen consoles, due to the music licensing, and ofc the nightmare that is the streaming system (their insanely messy Pre-Computed Visibility system - nuff said)either wait until it's playable on xenia, or go buy a 360 (a RGH/jtag one for the best experience, load up freestyle dash on it and take screenshots, mod the ♥♥♥♥ out of the game and everything).
