I've read is possible to have McNamara stepped down and Hardin as Elder and still get the truce with NCR, but the way the wiki puts it is misleading and confusing. The wiki says:'There is a way to oust McNamara and have a peaceful outcome. However, after talking to Hardin and beginning the process of overthrowing McNamara, simply don't go back to the bunker until after speaking to Moore about the Brotherhood. Hardin doesn't 'officially' become Elder until the Courier returns to the bunker.' The problem with this is as soon as you talk to Hardin it automatically begins the process and he instantly becomes Elder. I tried talking to McNamara about the NCR but he doesn't offer the truce.Must I complete Still in the Dark, and then get the truce, and at that point bring up the chain that binds with Hardin?Someone please clear this up for me.

Originally posted by:The wiki is misleading. Sometimes the quest trigger where Hardin is flagged as an Elder does not start, true, but in reality if you side with him, you MUST kill the BoS if you want to complete the game. That's the price you pay for supporting Hardin who sounds convincing but is actually little less than a military zealot. So does that mean that it is not possible at all?Either support McNamara all the way and get NCR's truce or support Hardin and then have to blow them up? That's pretty lame.

That's pretty lame.Considering Hardin is even more of a hardcore traditionalist. It's even in his name. Originally posted by:It's not lame, it's called living with consequences.

In FO2 there was a quest where going out all the way in helping a town actually resulted in there demise. You simply have to make a decision and sometimes you make the wrong ones.Don't get me wrong, I understand that. Fallout is all about these types of choices.

Originally posted by:Just seems like it wasn't thought through completely when the game was designed. You hit the proverbial nail in the head: lots of quest branches were only half-finished or rushed because of very strict time constraints. (Bethesda gave itself 3-5 years to develop a Fallout, gave one and a half to Obsidian.)The Karma/Infamy system is not perfect, I agree, but at least it is there. You can avoid Legion (or other) infamy with sneak kills if you are 100% not seen when firing and kill in one shot. I know it does not help in lots of situations, but the option at least is still there. The insta-news thing is in lots of RPGs sadly, that is a design flaw that was never circumvented or fixed in any game.

It's even worse in medieval and/or Japanese RPGs. Originally posted by:Don't get me wrong, I understand that. Fallout is all about these types of choices. However, I find it annoying when certain paths are simply 'removed' or not even considered with another side. We're getting you wrong because you're talking out both sides of your mouth. You're saying you understand the consequences of choice in the Fallout universe, and then proceed to complain that you don't like having the consequences of choice. You made a choice to follow a hardliner, whether or not you understood the consequences of that choice are your problem, not the games.

Hardin makes his feelings about the outside world well known:'Our Elder at the time, Elijah, was too concerned with getting HELIOS running and fending off the NCR, so he ordered us to leave them alone. It's time we correct that oversight, and show this region that the Brotherhood is still a force to be reckoned with. I want you to visit these weapons dealers, this Van Craff family, and make an example of them. Leave no one alive.' If you listened to Veronica at all you'd hear that given the chance, Hardin would charge her with sedition, which is always a capital crime punishable by death.Essentially you're complaining that the game won't pretend that a psychotic, paranoid lunatic can be reasoned with on a rational level.Fallout games implement choice and consequences of choice better than 99.9% of video games out there. If you don't like it, maybe try Hello Kitty Island Adventure.
